heres a contrarian question regarding your step
"Circle 1: Stages 1 to 3 of CTB (719 problems). Work through them organized by theme so that I know what I am supposed to be doing (e.g., rook to mate in one). Max time: 10 min/problem. Focus on thinking and getting it right, not speed."
Would it be of equivalent benefit to look at the answer and not try to solve it? thus focusing on recognition not analysis. I have not come to any conclusions on this and am interested in your thoughts.

Hi Takchess. I assume that if I just passively view the solution, I won't learn it as well as if I solve it myself. In the early circles, especially, I want accuracy and calculation. The later circles are for testing the automatic recognition abilities built up in the early circles.

Only once do I let myself see the theme. After that one time, I am going bareback. I let myself see the theme to try to learn 'meta-patterns', i.e., recognize patterns when certain motifs are more likely to apply. This may be a more important skill than pattern recognition itself.

Psalcido: CTB starts with one-move and then works up to more complicated. I like it.

I tried your thought process on my most recent game (see my most recent post for how it went...). I lost the game, but it had nothing to do with the thought process. when i was using the chessplanner effectively, i was playing my best chess of the game. i really like its organization, as it helps me gather my thoughts efficiently. thanks!

Generalkaia: hey, great to hear it!

I still find it hard to apply CP, especially now that I'm not thinking about it due to the circles. I can't wait to really buckle down and use the thought process. Once I finish these circles I'll be ready to go over Pandolfini using CP if you still want.
