45 45 Tourny Game: Another Grand Prix Attack

I got a win as white in the 45 45 League. Again, I got an opportunity to play the Grand Prix Attack (1. e5 c5 2. f4) against the Sicilian. You can see the annotated game here. I can see why they call the GPA an Attacking opening, as it really seems to open up the opponent's kingside to your Queen, Rook, and Bishop. It was these pieces, in coordination, that led my attack. I felt like Temposchlucker.

I made some boneheaded moves, which are noted in the annotations, but for the most part I am happy with my play. I played more actively than usual, and didn't make moves that removed pressure from key squares. Both changes made a big difference.

Well played!
You should have a look at 10.Qe1 in stead of 10.Qe2
The move 2.f4 is designed to bring over the Queen to the kingside via e1.

At e2 the Queen is impeded by the knight at f3. Luckily he traded the knight at f3 for no reason.

I don't know if it's possible to play Qe1 at once. You always have to be aware of the weak point c2 in this kind of positions. But Fritz can help you with that.

Tempo: thanks for the tip about e1: that indeed looks like a nice location for her. I think I was just sort of blindly following the 'connect my rooks' principle to complete my opening.

You are right about c2. In both games with the GPA c2 was a big concern that I had to use tempi to defend.

nice game. I am glad you started posting your grand prix games as I initially thought the grand prix was the Keres attack which calls for the G4 pawn push. My initial surface impression of this opening was I didn't like it. I have trouble seeing the benefits of an early f4 push as it felt did not create tensions in black positions. It's like a king gambit with nothing to gambit. However in your game you cordoned off blacks major pieces on the queenside while having a nice kingside attack. This is an opening I need to look at more as I feel my play against the sicilian is somewhat stale. What do you view the benefits of the early f4 push are? Nicely done.

Tak: thanks. I have so much to say about why I like the GPA that I'm gonna turn it into a post. :)

Kudos on a well played game. 13. Rac1! patiently shutting down counterplay before launching the attack was really cool.

Using the rook on the g-file to create a weakness and then switching back to the f-file is the kind of thing you read in a book and wonder if it ever happens to real people.

great job with the play and the notes. it seems you are learning a great deal from every game. which makes you dangerous.
