White to move

Nice problem. I think the answer is...

1.Bxc6! If Black doesn't capture the bishop immediately, then it will retreat, and White will simply be up a piece. So let us look at the recaptures.

1...dxc6 2.Nxc6 is mate, whereas
1...Qxc6 just throws away the queen

so that leaves

1...bxc6 and now White has the killer shot
2.Bg5+! What can Black try?

2...Qxg5 3.Nxc6 is mate, while
2...f6 3.Ne6+ and the Black queen drops
2...Qxe7 ditto

and that leaves us with

2...Be7 3.Bxe7+ Qxe7 4.Nxc6+ which is a massacre.

Anonymous: I hadn't even considered the 2...Be7 move from black. Fantastic analysis.

This is a problem in Phase 5 of Chess Tactics for Beginners.
