When does your chess season end?

The World Open was my World Series. Rather than jump right in, I have taken a much needed break. Hey, even professional athletes have a season, and after the end of the season take a deserved break. Unlike professional sports, chess has no built-in season. There are great tournaments almost every month. It is up to each player to decide the tournament for which he is training, the big tournament, and that is the end of his season. Then, take a nice little break to recharge, and come back a better player. Even Bill Buckner had to take a break.

I'd say post WO is my break period. Note my recent blog entry, though no WO this year... still taking a break with the family at a great place.

During the school year I can't really play too much but I study and maybe play online.

My "playing" season is during the summer when I can actually make a tournament here and there. Even then it is sketchy since most tournaments are on weekends and a lot of my summer work as a musician is also on weekends.

My chess season ends in march when national interclub and Zilveren Toren and antwerp commerce(all team competitions) are over.

Offcourse i play club championship in april-juni if i have the time but my season starts again in juli-august with an international tournament. Last year it was Scheveningen, this year it will be Gand (Gent).

My chess season never ends. That's probably part of my problem. :-)

I've found that slow and steady works best for me. It keeps me from long periods of not thinking about chess and it helps me build a regular schedule....it's pretty hard for me to find entire weekends to devote to tournaments.

My general goal is to hit my 1 game per week tournament as many times as I can in a year and maybe throw one or two weekenders in there....I guess I'm aiming for 40-50 OTB games per year...

It's more like I was busted for steroids and was suspended a season. This weekend will be my first tourney in a long time.

It had been my habit to break a bit from chess in the summer in order to make more time for fishing, but my success in chess the last few years have forced me to play summer events. My chess teaching drops off dramatically when school is out, but a few youth want lessons through the summer.

Hey BD!

I've been looking on your site to see if you have a RSS feed, but I can't seem to find one.

Ever thought about adding one to your site?

It would make reading your site on my Blackberry easier! :)

oh.. and BTW, my chess season ends when i have a brand new baby girl. I can't study chess or play for that matter!!! However, I would gladly put chess on hold for her!

cheers!
